Here are a couple of articles I came across about Kalib Starnes. Starnes is the lone Canadian in TUF 3, and in the first episode, Kalib Starnes pretty much dominated Mike Stein. He has the looks of a rugged fighter, but sounds like an intellectual kind of guy (see below). Even though some might label him kind of brainy, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to urinate in Starnes bed this season.
Brawn and brains a lethal mix: Canadian mauler in third season of Ultimate Fighter
Kalib Starnes is an avid reader of Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn, two renowned critics of American power. He also writes his own material for spoken word competitions and poetry slams. Another of his pastimes is subduing rivals with the "rear naked choke."
If you have a stereotype of an ultimate fighter in your head, then Starnes is not a perfect fit. But the Sussex, B.C. native — Canada's lone entry in the third season of The Ultimate Fighter, which began Thursday on Spike TV — more than measures up. "I've found people that are involved in this sport to be quite a diverse group of characters. It's difficult to really label one group of people. Not all Canadians are nice and not all Americans are stupid," Starnes said, little realizing how much those sound like fighting words.
"I don't really know what a fighter is supposed to be," says Starnes, 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds of lean, rippling muscle. "For me, it's as normal as (someone) getting up … and going into the office every day."
B.C. fighter in third season of Ultimate Fighter
…The six-foot-three Starnes, who cuts 20 pounds off his normal weight of 205 to fight as a middleweight, found out he had made the show in January. Filming ended in the third week in February, meaning Starnes has had to stay mum for a while.
"I'm hounded constantly for information on the show," he says.
Starnes, 30, is sworn to secrecy about the outcome of the show. But perhaps one hint of how well things went is the fact he has quit his day job as security supervisor of Fraser Downs Racetrack.
Now he trains and coaches full time at Revolution Martial Arts in suburban Langley. His coaches include veteran boxer Tony Pep, former Olympic wrestler Colin Daynes and Brazilian jiu-jitsu expert Bruno Fernandes.
A single father, he has a 3 1/2-year-old daughter Sienna.
It all makes for a full day. But Starnes, no ordinary fighter, tries to make time for reading. He lists Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn among his favourite authors and takes part in spoken word competition…
