Boxing VS Muay Thai Kickboxing plus Some Notes

Here’s a video of a boxer vs. a kickboxer in K-1 event that was held in Nagoya, Japan, in 2004.

The fighters are former IBF Cruiserweight Champion King Arthur Williams (Boxing) and Alexey "The Red Scorpion" Ignashov (Muay Thai kickboxing).

Oh man…talk about eating low kicks.

This is a classic example of someone who practices pure boxing, against another who trains in thaiboxing.  As you might know, boxing doesn’t allow kicks or knees, so as a boxer it can be hard to defend against these attacks.  I’m not sure how much time Author Williams had to prepare for this fight, but it obviously didn’t pay off.

Some notes from the video clip about what NOT to do when you’re stand up sparring:

1.    Do not block low kicks with your hands!

It’s not an effect block (you should check it off by raising your thigh and angle your shin so it meets the incoming shin at a perpendicular angle).  Also, it leaves your head wide open to an attack.  In this case, Williams almost gets his head taken off by a low kick - high kick combo because he left his hands down after the block

2.    Do not bury your head in your opponents’ chest to throw body shots

You’ll end up in the receiving end of a Muay Thai high clinch and eating knees for dinner

3.    Do not circle towards somebody’s power leg if they’re kicking you with that leg

…Or else it’ll just make their kicks hurt more.  (I don’t think it would have mattered which way Author Williams circled against Ignashov though)

Enjoy the vid :)

Incredible. I can't believe that William didn't even seem to have any preparation for leg-kicking. Excellent critique in your post, too. Love your site. I've added you to my blogroll. Thanks.
