I found this post over at Teodoro Defensive Arts, called “Why Do We Get Hit?“.
Basically the title says it all, but the article categorizes and shows pictures of why people get nailed with a punch or kick, and some advice on what to do.
From Teodoro Defensive Arts:
Besides the obvious answer of, “there was nothing in the way,” the reason is usually one or more of these three factors:
1. You are out of your base defensive position (OOP)
2. You are back on your heels (BOH)
3. Improper guard for the range (IG)
Check out some examples here.
The only thing I can think of that’s missing is getting hit while you’re expecting something else (GHWYESE). For example, someone keeps on throwing leg kicks at you while looking at your legs, and next thing you know, he’s looking at your leg, he fakes a leg kick, but since you’re expecting a leg kick you defend with a leg block…but all of a sudden he’s throwing punches at your face.
One of the best tips to best avoid or defend against strikes is:
- Stay in your base fighting stance – that basically means you don’t let your opponent flank you, or get to an angle you can’t defend; NEVER allow someone to get behind you
Not only that, but if you’re not in a solid stance (I’m not talking about a horse stance or anything like that), you’re not in an optimal position to attack or defend in the first place!
Keep a strong stance boys and girls.

Meet Matt Hughes Today! Seminar Tomorrow!
Matt Hughes is in London right now signing autographs (just found this out!), and there’s 15 minutes left to go to meet, greet, and get an autograph from him.
From Suffer-System.com:
Come one and come all to our first sponsored meet and greet. The free “autograph & photograph” session will be held on Friday April 28/06 from 3:15pm-5:30pm at Westmount Mall (lower Level Centre Court). People are encouraged to bring their cameras & come out to meet the UFC champion. They can also purchase Matt Hughes gear and a new line of “Suffer System gear” will be unvield and available for purchase!
Registration for the Matt Hughes seminar will also be available.
The seminar is tomorrow, so I’m not sure if there’s any more spots open in order to attend.
Also, from MMA Toronto, there’s a seminar with Matt Hughes on April 30, 2006 at the Kombat Arts Training Academy. I can’t seem to find any information on their website about the Hughes seminar, but there is one with Erik Paulson coming up on May 27, 2006.
You know there’s interest in mixed martial arts and MMA training in Ontario if fighter’s like Matt Hughes and Erik Paulson are holding seminars here…dammit Ontario, legalize MMA so those who are training can actually compete here!

Georges St. Pierre Soon to be A Millionaire
Who else wants to be a millionaire MMA fighter?
Check out the article from the Canadian Press below:
Georges St. Pierre gets another crack at UFC welterweight belt
TORONTO (CP) – Georges St. Pierre is on his way to becoming Canada’s first million-dollar mixed martial arts fighter.
On Friday the charismatic 170-pounder from Montreal was granted a second shot at UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes.
There is no date yet for the title fight, but the St. Pierre camp expects it in early September. Las Vegas is the likely site.
Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White made the championship bout announcement Friday in a taped message during a Toronto appearance by the Montreal fighter and lightweights Mark Hominick and Sam Stout, who train out of London, Ont.
The title bout adds to St. Pierre’s status in the sport – and his bank account.
“He’s making serious money,” said Stephane Patry, St. Pierre’s manager and president of the Montreal-based TKO promotions company.
“(In 2005) he made close to $350,000. And if everything goes as planned, this year he’s going to make close to a million. He’s making a lot of money with his fights, and also a lot of money with his endorsements.
“It’s safe to say he’s going to be a millionaire.”
